The mainstream identity of a roots musician has been that of a white male troubadour for around a century, but it’s a history Lady Nade and contemporaries such as Yola and Rhiannon Giddens are challenging wherever they can. “Being told that black females must only sing soul or jazz has always
been a huge barrier to my career,” the acclaimed UK singer and songwriter reveals. “But I don’t have to be defined that way… and I won’t be any longer.” Reaction to the rolling organ and harmony-led ‘Ain’t One Thing’ – the righteous late 2020 single Nade dropped during lockdown – has been wonderful and 2021has seen Nade break further out of any box. “I’ve been working with Boo Hewerdine and developing the Americana aesthetic my writing naturally drifts towards,” reveals Nade about her next steps…
