Black Deer Artists play NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

Black Deer Festival Live Performances

The Tiny Desk Concerts recorded live at the desk of NPR’s ‘All Songs Considered’ host Bob Boilen are legendary in Americana and roots music.

Capturing intimate performances from emerging artists and musical heroes alike, the series is one of the most popular of its type in the world. New songs, old favourite and classic covers all form part of the set when artists are asked to play a Tiny Desk Concert – and the idea has overtaken the likes of MTV Unplugged in a post-streaming world. Many of the singers, bands and musicians who have played Black Deer have performed NPR Tiny Desk Concerts and 2020’s line-up is no different.

Here, we present a few of our favourite 2020 Black Deer artists who have already graced the Tiny Desk stage…

Wilco

In 2016, Wilco were the first band ever to be asked back to the Tiny Desk for a repeat performance. Coming hot on the heels of ninth studio album, ‘Star Wars’, Jeff Tweedy led his pioneering Americana heroes through a mini set of new songs and deep cuts…

The Milk Carton Kids

The Milk Carton Kids were just that, kids, when they first performed for NPR back in 2012. The duo of Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale are well known these days for their intricate guitar stylings and gorgeous harmonies, but seven years ago this was one of the performances that broke the future Grammy Award-winners out of the box…

Courtney Marie Andrews

‘May Your Kindness Remain’, the sixth album from Phoenix singer/songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews, was an ever-present choice in every critics’ ‘Best Albums of 2018’ lists. It was a richly deserved accolade and a breakthrough to the mainstream for this most singular of artists. Startling singing and deep country soul sounds dominate on her Tiny Desk Concert and Andrews hasn’t looked back since…

The Secret Sisters

Only siblings sing like The Secret Sisters. You couldn’t fit a cigarette paper between the close harmonies of sisters Laura and Lydia Rogers and the folk duo were the perfect fit for Tiny Desk when they stopped the clocks during their 2016 session. ‘The Tennessee River Runs Low’ was a highlight of third album ‘You Don’t Own Me Anymore’ and it provides the perfect soundtrack for their NPR debut…
